FLOOD channels were created on Mars when molten rock thawed the frozen surface of the planet, say geophysicists at the University of Cambridge. Dan McKenzie and Francis Nimmo propose that magma flowing beneath the Martian surface pushed other rocks apart to make long faults. This hot rock also melted the Martian permafrost from below. “When that happens on Earth, everything landslides all over the place,” says McKenzie.
