UNTREATED epileptic seizures may cause lasting brain damage, according to scientists at the US National Institutes of Health near Washington DC. William Theodore and his colleagues studied 35 patients with uncontrolled temporal lobe epilepsy originating in the hippocampus, a part of the brain that is used in learning and memory. Most of the patients had experienced several seizures each month for over 20 years. Theodore’s team used volumetric magnetic resonance imaging to compare the size of the hippocampus in the affected and unaffected hemispheres of the brain.
